Lyrics to "You Will Always Be My Family"

Verse 1
We only get just one lifetime, and we only get one family for the ride. Our lives may take us different places, but we always keep those people deep inside.

Verse 2
I remember when, I always used to say, how I just couldn't wait to get away. But it's funny how every time I turn around, It seems I always come back home to them.

Chorus
You will always be my family And I love you just the way you are . . . I wouldn't change a thing about you even if I could, cause no one else is you.

Verse 3
Some have hearts pure and golden And some have souls just like muddy feet No one else can drive you crazy . . . no one else, like your family.

Verse 4
Now I remember when I always used to think that others had it better than I did, But looking back, the good times and the bad I'd have to say I'd do it all again.

Chorus
You will always be my family And I love you just the way you are . . . I wouldn't change a thing about you even if I could, cause no one else is you.

Bridge
When I pray I ask God to teach us GRACE and to build a bridge and bless us all with LOVE.

Chorus
You will always be my family And I love you just the way you are . . . I wouldn't change a thing about you even if I could, cause no one else is you.

The Story Behind the Song
This song is a dedication to family. It is a simple piano ballad that encourages us to take a look around and see that the family is a great testing ground of our humanity. I wrote this song when I was 23 with Ken Bujnoch playing the arrangement. I did it during a time when I began to realize that our relationships with our families (blood or otherwise) potentially brought us to a greater understanding of ourselves in relation to the LOVE we found present within ourselves. I played it for my family during the Christmas of 1993. The last time I can remember my whole family being together as a group at Christmas. I put the tape recorder out and pushed play and left the room. I didn't want them to see me cry as they listened. This song was a "white flag" that came at the end of a long and painful time for me. A time where I was getting over much neglect and making peace with things that had happened that I would rather had not.

Personally, I do not believe in mistakes. I believe ALL things happen as they should in order to reveal the greater truth we fail to face. No thing is so terrible that it does not have a lesson hidden within it somewhere. I believe we chose the family we would be born to before we got here. They may be far from perfect, but I think there is a reason for that. They are teachers that help us to see how willing we are to give and then receive LOVE unconditionally. Sometimes it's the people we love most, who are the ones who hurt us the most. Our goal is to learn how to let go of our resentments and to attempt to allow one another our respective humanities. Even if it means we must LOVE THEM FROM AFAR. Now, this does not mean LEAVE AND FORGET THEM WHILE THEY ARE FAR! (That would only have us repeat unlearned mistakes.) It means, go away to a stable place so you can heal, let go, search within, seek to send them good energy, LOVE and LIGHT while you learn to make peace inside yourself. If you want true peace . . . LOVE is the only way to go! I have always known that LOVE is the greatest power in the Universe. It is the greatest problem solver. Love can move mountains. But in our human form it is the power of forgiveness that keeps us free.
